Phi Theta Kappa
Hello Alabama,
Well, it seems to be getting that time of year again! A new semester is
starting, getting ready for regional convention, and of course---those
Hallmarks. The last month has probably been a little hectic, but the work
is worth the outcome.
I hope everyone is having another great start to spring semester. One of
the things I would like to put out there to all the chapters is running
for regional officer. This is a wonderful experience, and with it comes a
lot of challenges. However, the pay-off is well worth it. You will have
opportunities that you could have never thought of. A year ago I would
never have thought that I would have spoken in front of the State Board of
Education. Nor would I have ever thought I would get to meet and talk with
Phi Theta Kappa Executive Director, Dr. Rod Risley.
We also had the opportunity to work with an amazing program--the Alabama
Poverty Project. With this group of caring individuals, we were able to
share the story of how the Alabama Region of Phi Theta Kappa helped the
people of Alabama who were affected by the April storms. We did
presentations at two of the APP events, and the statewide APP publication
told about our proposal for a statewide tuition reduction for tornado
victims. The State Board of Education’s approval of our proposal and the
cooperation of several community college presidents enabled many to start
or continue their education. We hope that the story inspired others to get
involved with recovery efforts as well.
So many of you have been shining examples of servant-leadership with your
hard work for Project SHARE. The money your chapter has raised will be an
important contribution to students at colleges impacted by the tornadoes.
Your chapter’s leadership through this project can carry over into the
coming year if you step up and take on a regional leadership role. So if
you have a desire to serve, and want to have an impact at the state level,
then get involved---run for the President or District Vice President
position. I would like to see several candidates from every District run
for a position. You have nothing to lose and everything to gain. If you
would like to know more about the benefits and requirements for these
positions, please email Ms. Nora Lee (nora.lee@athens.edu) or any of the
regional officers.
As you all know, the Alabama Regional Convention is quickly approaching,
and I am looking forward to my chapter, Sigma Lambda, hosting this year.
We at Calhoun are looking forward to hosting this event, and hope to see
many of you there! As some of you may know, Calhoun currently has the
Spirit Stick. This, however, is up for grabs come March 9th. For the ones
who know me, you know I'm a sucker for and an amazing Roll Call. I would
like to take this time to say BRING IT. At our Mock Chapter events we had
some amazing Roll Calls. The ones who were there can testify! Make it a
song, a skit, an interpretive dance, it doesn't matter. Just have fun! All
the details are getting ironed out presently, and will be finished in the
near future. As soon as this happens all the information will be sent to
you. If you have any questions please feel free to contact me anytime.
Just a couple more things to hit on---Hallmark Awards and Project SHARE.
The Project SHARE deadline for the regional award for the most money
raised is February 1. If you receive donations after this, you can still
turn them in to Dr. and Mrs. Lee. The awards to the colleges are planned
for the end of April, so please continue your fundraising efforts.
I want to wish everyone good luck on your Hallmarks. Thank you for all the
hard work that you put into Phi Theta Kappa.
Above and beyond is what makes us great. Alabama is a GREAT region, and I
am proud to be associated with you.
