BOAZ – Snead State Community College’s Theta Iota chapter of Phi Theta Kappa inducted its largest class during the spring ceremony on Tuesday, March 9. Snead State President Dr. Robert Exley shared with the group of inductees how the honor society changed his life. “In high school, my goal was to be a mediocre student, and I was very successful at it. College was not on the radar for me. I thought college was for people who had more money than we did. I went to work at a chemical plant, and the local community college had a program for workers at the plant who worked rotating shifts. I was bored and thought I might learn something. A member of the faculty encouraged me to be a member of Phi Theta Kappa,” said Dr. Exley, who later served as the national PTK president in 1979-80. Leadership conferences, scholarship opportunities, and community service experiences are just some of the benefits of joining Phi Theta Kappa, according to Dr. Exley.
“Phi Theta Kappa is open to anyone and everyone if you’re willing to commit to excellence. Never limit yourself. Phi Theta Kappa can provide you with opportunities to accomplish anything you set your mind to. This is an organization where dreams do come true,” he said.
Chief Academic Officer Dr. Larry Miller served as the guest speaker for the ceremony. As a enthusiast of informational technology, Dr. Miller described how advances in the area have enhanced learning opportunities over the years. He encouraged the inductees to use their learning opportunities to develop the four areas of honor emphasized through PTK - Scholarship, Leadership, Service, and Fellowship.
PTK President Suzanne Kornegay, who was recently named the New Century Scholar through her work with the organization, spoke about her experiences with the honor society. “It has opened doors of opportunity for me. I have made lasting friendships and have interacted with people I never would have met otherwise. I have had many life changing experiences,” Kornegay said.
